This post finds us in beautiful Cape Leveque, about 200 km north of Broome.
Our journey here was most dramatic to say the least. We left Derby at about 8 am and headed west along the bitumen for about 200 km, then did a right hand turn on to the Cape Leveque Road. The tar ran out after about 10 km at which time we hit the dirt. This section of the trip was a nightmare. 100 km of bone jarring, teeth rattling red corrugations and washouts. Finally after about 2 hours we were back on the hard stuff again, so we deviated off to Beagle Bay to visit the little church there that was built in the early 1900's by the local aboriginal community and the catholic priests. Back in 2002 the steeple fell down, but has since been restored. The church is noted though for it's beautiful shell altar and shell religious images which adorn the walls.
After a quick bite to eat we were back on the road again, but started to notice a horrible burning smell. No warning lights came on so on we went. Then a little further along the road the car was enveloped in thick smoke. 50 km from help, no mobile phone reception. What a dilemma. But, fellow travellers out here are only to happy to pullover and offer assistance and sure enough a couple of vehicles soon appeared on the scene and with many ideas being offered, it was determined that the driver of our vehicle has left the car in High Range when we hit the bitumen and subsequently boiled the oil in the diff. So knowing the reason and with the consensus being no damage would be incurred if we continued on we did so, but cautiously.
The drama to get here was definitely worth it. This place is glorious.
There are 2 beaches within a 2 minute walk from the camp ground, both share the same incredibly red cliffs, white sand and clear turquoise waters. It is just paradise.
We had wanted to do a boat trip out around the nearby islands, but unfortunately there are no other takers for the tour we wanted to get on, so we can't do what we had hoped. It seems everyone wants to go fishing. Never mind.
Up until today the weather has been beautiful, up round the 30 mark, but today has a nip in the air and the sky is grey and it is probably about 23. We have had to put jumpers on - how rude.
Tomorrow we take off out of here heading to Broome for 3 nights. Fingers crossed there will not be any dramas but we are not looking forward to the 100 km of red rough stuff.
Till Broome.
