We arrived here in Winton a coupla hours ago after an easy drive from Barcaldine where we stayed last night.
Barcaldine is midway between Emerald and Longreach and a long drive from Winton. As we had never stayed there before we figured we should.
Barcaldine is home to The Tree of Knowledge and in was here in the 1890's that the Labor Party was born during the shearers strike.
Somehow I feel that the words 'knowledge' and 'labor party' is something on an oxymoron!!!
After what can only be described as an awful cup of coffee in a little cafe we spent the next 5 minutes exploring the town. So much for Barcaldine.
Here in Winton today we have had a great coffee at the bakery. No exploring here - we have stayed here a few times and have seen all the sights, dinosaur footprints at Lark Quarry etc, so we are just doing a spot of reading.
Tomorrow we head off to Mt Isa for 3 nights. With fingers crossed there won't be too many sections of road under repair. From the moment we crossed into Queensland we have come across so much roadwork, it is now getting decidedly boring!!!
Oh and to the trivia team - Winton is the birthplace of Qantas and also Waltzing Matilda was written at a homestead near here and first publicly performed at the North Gregory Hotel here in town..
And Chris...Mike was most offended at your comment regarding his age!
Till Mt Isa...
Enjoying your blog .... apologies to Mike - hope he's still talking to me!
